Edward Teach, known as Blackbeard, was the most feared pirate of the early 18th-century Caribbean and American coast, commanding the Queen Anne's Revenge. He cultivated a demonic image, weaving lit fuses into his beard to wreathe himself in smoke during battle, and once blockaded the port of Charleston. He fell in 1718 in a furious boarding fight against a Royal Navy crew.
