Father of the Algorithm
Muhammad ibn Musa al-Khwarizmi was a Persian polymath of the ninth century who worked at the House of Wisdom in Baghdad. His treatise on al-jabr gave algebra both its method of balancing equations and its very name, while his work spreading the Hindu-Arabic numeral system transformed mathematics across the medieval world. The Latinized form of his name, Algoritmi, gave us the word algorithm, marking him as a founding figure of arithmetic and computation.
