First Into the Dark

Before reliable lamps, the torchbearer carried fire into mine shaft, tunnel, and midnight road, the single flame that held back the dark for everyone who followed. In mines the bearer also gauged foul air, for a guttering torch warned of the deadly damps below. To go first with the light was a humble, constant courage on which whole crews staked their lives.
