The stonemason was among the most skilled craftsmen of the medieval world, cutting and dressing blocks by eye and setting them true to raise the cathedrals, castles, and city walls meant to outlast their makers. Organized into lodges that guarded their secrets, masons traveled from one great work to the next, and the marks they chiseled into the stone can still be read on the walls they built.
