Francis Drake
The Queen's Privateer
Sir Francis Drake was an English sea captain, privateer, and explorer of the Elizabethan era. Sailing under a commission from Queen Elizabeth I, he raided Spanish ports and treasure ships across the Americas, and between 1577 and 1580 he became the first Englishman to circumnavigate the globe aboard the Golden Hind. Knighted for his plunder and feared by Spain as a pirate, he later helped repel the Spanish Armada in 1588 as a vice admiral of the English fleet.
