Athena sprang fully armored from the brow of Zeus to become the Greek goddess of wisdom, just warfare, and crafts. Patron of the city of Athens, which she won by gifting the olive tree, she favored the cunning stroke over the reckless charge and guided heroes such as Odysseus and Perseus. Owl, aegis, and spear were her emblems, and her counsel turned battles before the spears met.
