Quetzalcoatl, the Feathered Serpent of Mesoamerica, was worshipped as god of wind, learning, and the morning star, credited with giving humankind maize, the calendar, and the arts of civilization. Gentle among bloodier deities and opposed to human sacrifice, legend told that he departed eastward over the sea, vowing one day to return.
