Amaterasu, the great sun goddess of Japanese Shinto myth and ancestress of its emperors, illuminated the world from the High Plain of Heaven. When her brother Susanoo's cruelty drove her to hide in a cave, creation fell into darkness, until a mirror and the laughter of the gods coaxed her out. Her return restored the dawn, and from her descends the imperial line itself.
