Lakshmi is the Hindu goddess of wealth, fortune, beauty, and prosperity, and the consort of Vishnu. She arose radiant and seated upon a lotus from the cosmic ocean when the gods and demons churned it for the nectar of immortality. Worshipped above all at Diwali, when lamps are lit to welcome her, she is invoked for abundance both material and spiritual, her four hands pouring forth golden coins and grace.
