Cleopatra VII, last pharaoh of Egypt, was a scholar fluent in many tongues who steered her kingdom through Rome's civil wars with intellect, charm, and ruthless statecraft, binding both Julius Caesar and Mark Antony to her cause. When their fortunes failed at Actium, she chose death by the bite of an asp rather than submit to capture, ending the line of the Ptolemies.
