Sitting Bull, holy man and chief of the Hunkpapa Lakota, foresaw a great victory in a Sun Dance vision shortly before the warriors of the Plains overwhelmed Custer's cavalry at the Little Bighorn in 1876. A leader revered for his spiritual authority and unyielding refusal to surrender his people's lands and way of life, he resisted the reservation system to the end.
