Shield-Brother of No Particular Battle

The hoplite was the citizen-soldier of ancient Greece, a free man, often a farmer or craftsman, who armed himself with bronze helmet, round shield, and thrusting spear. Standing shoulder to shoulder in the dense phalanx, each man's shield guarded the comrade beside him, and through such disciplined ranks the Greeks won famous victories at Marathon and Plataea.
