Mulan, heroine of an ancient Chinese ballad, took her aging father's place in the army by disguising herself as a man, and served with distinction through long years of war on the frontier. When the campaigns ended she refused official reward and returned home, revealing only then to her astonished comrades that the soldier they had fought beside was a woman.
