Lady Bai, the White Snake, is the heroine of one of China's most beloved folktales. A white serpent spirit who cultivated for a thousand years to take the form of a beautiful woman, she fell in love with and married the mortal Xu Xian. The monk Fahai sought to part them, and in her struggle to reunite with her husband she flooded a temple and was imprisoned beneath Hangzhou's Leifeng Pagoda.
