Cats were held sacred in ancient Egypt as living embodiments of Bastet, goddess of home, fertility, joy, and protection, and to kill one, even by accident, could be punishable by death. Temple cats prowled the sanctuaries as honored guardians, and beloved house cats were mourned and mummified, revered as small bearers of the goddess's grace and warmth.
