The Salt Mother
The primordial Mesopotamian goddess of the salt sea, Tiamat embodied the churning chaos of the deep, mingling her waters with the freshwater Apsu to birth the first gods. When the younger deities disturbed her, she spawned an army of monstrous serpents and dragons to wage war. Marduk faced her in single combat, caught her in his net, and split her vast body to fashion the sky and the seas of the world.
