Hammurabi
The Lawgiver of Babylon
Sixth king of Babylon's first dynasty, Hammurabi unified Mesopotamia through conquest and diplomacy in the eighteenth century BCE. He is immortalized for his code of law, carved upon a great diorite stele, which set out nearly three hundred rulings on justice, trade, family, and retribution. Crowned by the sun-god Shamash, he proclaimed himself the king who brought righteousness to the land.
