Founder Beneath the Sandalwood
Dangun Wanggeom is the legendary founder of Gojoseon, the first Korean kingdom, said to have been established in 2333 BCE. He was born of Hwanung, a son of the heavenly god Hwanin who descended to earth beneath a sacred sandalwood tree, and of a bear that became a woman by enduring a trial of garlic and mugwort in a cave. Reigning for a thousand years before becoming a mountain spirit, Dangun is revered as the progenitor of the Korean people.
