Fionn mac Cumhaill is the legendary hunter-warrior who led the Fianna, the roving war-band of ancient Ireland. As a boy he was set to cook the Salmon of Knowledge for the poet Finn Eces; burning his thumb on the fish, he sucked it and so gained all the wisdom of the world, and ever after he need only bite that thumb to know any hidden truth. His exploits, wisdom, and his band of loyal warriors fill the tales of the Fenian Cycle.
