Valkyrie of the Chosen Slain
A valkyrie of Norse myth, Sigrun is one of the shield-maidens of Odin who ride through the storm above the battlefield to choose which slain warriors will be borne to Valhalla. Her tale is told in the Helgi lays of the Poetic Edda: she defied her father's wishes to love the hero Helgi Hundingsbane, and after his death in battle she went to him in his burial mound, refusing to be parted even by death. The valkyries' name means choosers of the slain.
