Subutai was the foremost general of the Mongol empire and one of history's greatest strategists, the chief military planner under Genghis Khan and his successors. Rising from the son of a blacksmith to supreme commander, he directed campaigns across more territory than any general before him, conquering or raiding some thirty-two nations. His coordinated invasion of Eastern Europe in 1241 crushed the armies of Hungary and Poland in the same week, hundreds of miles apart.
