The Roadside Remedy

The hedge witch, or wise woman, practiced folk magic at the margins of village life across the Slavic lands and beyond. With no formal learning, she brewed remedies from root, herb, and charm, eased childbirth and fever, told fortunes, and traded blessings and curses for bread. The cunning folk were the only healers many peasants ever knew, their craft passed by word of mouth and viewed with a mix of need and fear.
