Ra, the supreme sun god of ancient Egypt, sailed his solar barque across the sky by day and journeyed through the underworld by night, each evening doing battle with the serpent Apophis to be reborn at dawn. Creator and king of the gods, he was the very light by which the world was ordered, and pharaohs claimed descent from him as the source of their rule.
