The Unwed Huntress

Atalanta, the swift huntress of Greek myth, was abandoned at birth and suckled by a she-bear before being raised by hunters. She drew first blood against the great Calydonian Boar and sailed among the heroes. Vowing to wed only a man who could outrun her, she slew the suitors she defeated until Hippomenes won the race by dropping three golden apples from Aphrodite, which she paused to gather, and so was at last overtaken.
