Hauler of Islands

Maui, the great trickster demigod of Polynesian myth, performed feats of strength and cunning that shaped the world. With a magical fish-hook he hauled up islands from the depths of the ocean, and he snared the sun with ropes to slow its passage and lengthen the day. He stole fire from the underworld to bring it to humankind, and in his final, fatal exploit died attempting to win immortality for mortals by passing through the body of the goddess of death.
