Three Hundred's Voice

The Spartans of ancient Greece raised their male citizens from boyhood in the brutal agoge, a lifelong military training that forged the most disciplined heavy infantry of the classical world. Fighting shoulder to shoulder in the phalanx behind great bronze shields, they prized courage and obedience above all. A Spartan officer would have stood among warriors like the three hundred who, under King Leonidas, held the narrow pass at Thermopylae against the vast Persian host in 480 BC.
