The Mongol horse-archer was the engine of the largest contiguous land empire in history, riding the steppe from childhood and loosing arrows at full gallop from a powerful composite bow. Masters of the feigned retreat, these horsemen lured enemies into chaos before wheeling to destroy them. Living in the saddle on a string of remounts, they outrode and outshot every army that dared pursue them under Genghis Khan and his heirs.
