Across ancient Egypt, guardians watched over the tombs and mortuary temples of the pharaohs, protecting the royal dead and their treasures of gold from robbers who braved the curses said to await them. In the necropolis on the desert's edge, priests and sentries maintained the offerings and rites believed to sustain the king in the afterlife. Their vigil over the silent house of the dead was a sacred and unending duty.
