The squire was a young noble in service to a knight, the crucial stage of apprenticeship on the path to knighthood in medieval Europe. He tended his master's warhorse and armor, carried the shield and lance, and learned swordsmanship, riding, and chivalry firsthand on campaign. After years of loyal service and proof of valor, he might at last be dubbed a knight and granted his own spurs, arms, and place at the table.
