The Lantern's Eye

The night watchman walked the lanes of early-modern towns with a lantern, a staff, and sometimes a bell or rattle, calling the hours and crying that all was well. He raised the hue and cry against fire, thieves, and drunken disorder, and stood as the only authority abroad after curfew, the frail forerunner of the organized police who would one day replace him.
