Foragers and scouts ranged ahead of every army and hunting band, men who read bent grass, broken twigs, and cold ashes to find game, water, and the enemy's line of march. In countless cultures their craft fed the host and guarded it from ambush, for an army that could not find forage starved, and a column that could not see its surroundings was easily destroyed.
