Conscript

The Pressed Hand

The conscript was the pressed man of pre-modern war, dragged from field or village by levy and quota, handed a spear with scant training, and thrust into the battle line for a cause he never chose. From the corvée armies of antiquity to the impressed ranks of feudal hosts, these reluctant soldiers made up the bulk of every army and bled in their thousands beneath banners they could not read.
