The Long Road's Faith

Pilgrims walked the long sacred roads of the medieval world toward Santiago, Rome, Jerusalem, and Canterbury, enduring hunger, foul weather, robbers, and disease in hope of grace, healing, or penance at journey's end. They wore the badge of their shrine, lodged in hospices raised for their care, and held that the hard road itself, not merely its destination, was the truest act of devotion.
